The Nation’s Only Museum Dedicated to Contemporary Latin American Art

June 24, 2019
Category: Things to do in Long Beach

If you are visiting the Long Beach area looking for events and attractions, The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) offers a unique day out and about.

Located in downtown Long Beach, it is currently the only museum in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art.

COMMITTED TO ART AND CULTURE

Offering ground-breaking exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events, MOLAA expands the knowledge and appreciation of modern and contemporary Latin American art and culture and encourages a cross-cultural dialogue.

Since opening, the MOLAA has doubled its size and the permanent collection now numbers over 1,600 works of art. Alongside unique exhibitions, it also provides stimulating educational programs for students and the community, as well as engaging cultural events.

The museum is housed in a contemporary structure designed by Mexican architect Manuel Rosen in the heart of Long Beach, and is home to four galleries, a contemporary project space, and an outdoor sculpture garden.

HISTORY OF MOLAA

Before becoming the MOLAA, the building itself had a rich history. Between 1913 and 1918 the site that the Museum now occupies was home to the Balboa Amusement Producing Company, at that time one of the world’s most innovative silent film studios.

MOLAA’s exhibition galleries, administrative offices, and store are housed in what was once a roller skating rink, known as the ‘Hippodrome’. The high vaulted ceilings and beautiful wooden floors were perfectly suited for the Hippodrome’s final metamorphosis into the Museum of Latin American Art.

Founded in 1996 by Dr. Robert Gumbiner, the MOLAA is the only museum in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art. The Museum welcomes schools and group tours, and also offers a bilingual Summer camp for children aged 6–12. The Culture and Art Camp highlights cultural traditions and art-making skills featured in our current exhibitions.

If you are visiting Long Beach and planning to visit MOLAA, then Hotel Current is the perfect place to stay. In addition to the art you’ll see when visiting MOLAA, you’ll get to feast your eyes on stunning hand-painted acrylic art pieces throughout Hotel Current!  Featuring a convenient location near to the airport and downtown entertainment, we are here to make your visit to Long Beach as enjoyable as possible.
